Active infections fell to 2,115 on October 1 and in the past fortnight have risen at a rate of nearly 1,000 a day.

Winde said the Western Cape has performed more than a million Covid-19 tests and recorded 196,474 positive results. “More than 6,300 people have lost their lives to this virus in the Western Cape,” he said.

Private pathology provider PathCare said over the weekend that all travel testing would be halted in some areas because “the current increase in Covid cases in the Western Cape is so great that all of our testing must be reserved for patients.”

The company added: “Our ability to make testing available to travelers has been exceeded. Effective immediately, we are unable to provide SARS-CoV-2 testing for international travel. We will honor appointments that have already been made.

“In the following areas we are unable to accept any additional travelers for testing: the northern and southern suburbs of Cape Town; central west coast; Somerset West; Paarl; Hermanus; and Worcester “.
