The number of positive Covid-19 cases is increasing faster than anticipated, says Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

Mkhize spoke on SABC’s Morning Live on Monday, after the country reached more than 1 million positive Covid-19 cases on Sunday.

He said that people had relaxed during the holiday season, contributing to the spread of the virus.

“We went from 10,000 to 14,000 in just a few days. People gather in crowded places, throw parties, and forget about masks. These are things that make the situation worse, ”Mkhize said.

“Right now, we are in the middle of the second wave. It is important that people take this seriously. It started with the Eastern Cape, then the Western Cape, now KZN and Gauteng followed suit. In many countries, this wave has been more severe than the first, ”he said.

While the situation in the Eastern Cape, which contains two Covid-19 hotspots, has stabilized, the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is of concern to residents of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

“Private hospitals have been filled before public hospitals. Trials were delayed and staff shortages had to be addressed. Changes were made, this helped alleviate the situation. Current trends in the Eastern Cape appear to be stabilizing. However, we are still monitoring the situation, ”he said.

Mkhize also emphasized the need for wearing a mask, social distancing, hand washing, and sanitizing as an important issue for them to focus on.

“Anyone who says that Covid-19 is not a serious problem, they are those who have not come into contact with someone who has had the virus,” he said.
