The Guardian ranked Sadio Mane fifth on its list of the 100 best footballers in the world. The Senegalese winger opens the way to Liverpool.

The Guardian has Sadio Mane as Liverpool’s best player and the fifth best on the planet right now. This comes from his list of the 100 best footballers of 2020.

Only Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne are better, by his calculations.

They also had an enthusiastic rating of Mane, labeling him ‘one of the most dangerous forwards in the game for 2020.’

Andy Hunter’s writing went on to label Mane as someone who ‘personifies the focus, class and industry of [Jurgen] The Klopp team ‘.

Mane wasn’t the only Liverpool star to make the list, of course. Mohamed Salah (8), Virgil van Dijk (10), Thiago (17), Trent Alexander-Arnold (18), Alisson (26), Jordan Henderson (33), Andy Robertson (34), Roberto Firmino (43), Fabinho (51), Diogo Jota (63) and Gini Wijnaldum (73) also made the cut.

What RTK has to say

The truly wonderful thing here is that we can both completely agree and disagree with this.

We can absolutely see Mane as the best Liverpool player and the fifth best in the world. But if you want to argue that Salah is better, or Van Dijk is better, or Alisson, or Alexander-Arnold, then do it, we can see that too.

One thing we certainly agree on is that Mane is a good example of someone who personifies Liverpool. It does, bigger than anyone.

Mane is the player you would point to when summarizing the side. It’s hard-working, versatile, lightens fast and technically sound

But it also has that rough quality that makes it so difficult to handle. Mane may not do everything with absolute precision, but that really works for him – his relentless energy is what really gets you.

And that sums up Liverpool too.
