LONDON – The Premier League club Wolves has banned its players from buying amid fears they could contract the coronavirus as infections rise in England.
Player and staff testing in England’s top flight will double to twice a week in areas of the country under level four restrictions.
The latest round of testing in the Premier League revealed seven positive cases out of 1,569 tests on Monday.
However, since then Manchester City have confirmed four more positive tests for Gabriel Jesus, Kyle Walker and two staff members.
“We have staff to go shopping and the supermarkets for them,” Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo said before his team’s clash with Tottenham on Sunday.
“We have to avoid any kind of risk because we have a small squad and we have problems with some players out.
“We cannot afford to lose any player, we tell them every day ‘don’t relax and try to be more careful.’
The wolves also told players to avoid supermarkets during the first three-month shutdown between March and May of this year.
“Our kitchen staff prepare a big box of the basics we need,” added Nuno.
“During the height of the pandemic, everyone suffered from it. When the situation improved, we told the players ‘they are free to go and do their own shopping’.
“But now that the levels are increasing so much and we have this new mutation that worries everyone so much, we are starting to put this together again. It’s about protecting ourselves.”
