JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng has seen a significant increase in road deaths so far over the Christmas weekend.

Seven people were killed in seven crashes in less than 18 hours.

Gauteng traffic police spokesman Obed Sibasa said Friday that pedestrians were among the dead.

“Of the seven deaths, three are pedestrians, three passengers and a cyclist,” Sibasa said.

He added: “The contributing factors were pedestrians not visible on the road, speeding, failing to stop at intersections and driving while intoxicated. The drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The highest breath alcohol reading was 1.1.0 “.

Sibasa said the traffic police were losing patience quickly.

“Motorists, pedestrians and other road users who violate the rules of the road will be dealt with decisively. We will have no choice but to do our job [and] I’ll lock you up, be careful, ”he said.
