The Richards Bay police in KwaZulu-Natal opened an investigation file after the body of a teenager was recovered from Lake Mzingazi.

National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon said that around 1:40 p.m. Thursday, the guard crew and emergency services were alerted to an ongoing drowning at a dam on Lake Mzingazi.

When they arrived at the scene, an 18-year-old from Empangeni was confirmed missing after disappearing underwater, he said.

According to Lambinon, the teenager had been fishing in a dam on Lake Mzingazi with his uncle when he had difficulty in the water.

“They had been fishing in the same place for the last four days,” he said.

Police divers, assisted by swimmers and rescue divers from NSRI, searched and recovered the teenager’s body.

His body was placed in the care of the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
