José Mourinho explains why he was upset with Dele Alli after Tottenham’s win at Stoke

Dele Alli made a welcome return to the Tottenham Hotspur team tonight, as he got off to an unusual start to the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Stoke City.

But while Alli performed well in general on his return to full-back, there was a moment in the game that did not please his coach José Mourinho.

With the Spurs leading 1-0 at the bet365 Stadium, the midfielder attempted a move that a teammate couldn’t find when Stoke broke and scored the tie.

It was one of Alli’s last appearances in the game as he was substituted 13 minutes later, and Alli showed his frustration after being taken out while pointing towards the bench after being replaced by Erik Lamela.

But Mourinho moved to explain why he was so disappointed in Alli for what he did in preparation for Stoke’s goal while speaking to the media after the match.

“Yes. For me a player who plays in that position is a player who has to link and create and not create problems for his own team,” he said.

“They put us on the counterattack, so yeah, I was upset.

“In the first half we were solid. They didn’t touch the ball, they didn’t take a shot, they didn’t take a corner. Instead of killing the game, we killed ourselves. After that moment we needed stability and attitude.”

This was only Alli’s 11th appearance of the season for Spurs, as his opportunities were limited with Mourinho this season.

There has largely been limited to appearances in cup competitions, with his two goals for Tottenham in the 2020/21 campaign, both in the Europa League.

The 24-year-old has only played four times in the Premier League, and has been linked to an exit, with Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United among the clubs linked to a possible loan.
