  • The health department has suspended screening at the Beitbridge border between South Africa and Zimbabwe to ease congestion.
  • The large volume of travelers to Zimbabwe is one of the causes of the congestion.
  • On Thursday, four truckers died while queuing at the border post.

The health department suspended the detection of Covid-19 at the Beitbridge border between South Africa and Zimbabwe to ease congestion.

Health department spokesman Popo Maja said that “in order to address congestion,” the department suspended temperature tests and health questionnaires as of December 23 because “the same is done on the side of immigration from Zimbabwe “.

First, it was reported that the antigen testing requirement, which the department introduced through amended health instructions, is slowing down processes at the border.

Trucks are marking the Manica bypass.

The port has deployed traffic officers at the border entrance during each holiday season to divert light vehicles to the Manica Beltway.

According to Maja, the light vehicles are searched by members of the South African Defense Forces and police officers before proceeding to the port health for review.

“Unfortunately, trucks have blocked the Manica bypass route, restricting the passage of light vehicles to the Manica bypass for law enforcement to search and sanitary controls at the port,” he added.

In addition, Maja said there are also “large volumes of travelers to Zimbabwe.”

“These travelers are NOT required to provide test results.”

On Thursday, News24 reported that four truckers were killed while queuing at the Beitbridge border post.
