JOHANNESBURG – Chippa United has announced its withdrawal from the appointment of Luc Eymael as head coach.

The club backtracked on its move one day after announcing that it had been elected to the position, prompting a widespread reaction.

Eymael has come under fire for comments he made to fans of a team he trained in Tanzania earlier this year, where he called them illiterate and referred to them as monkeys.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, Chippa United said it named him based on his coaching history, but has now considered the public reaction that has damaged his reputation.

Eymael was called up to coach the team after the club fired Lehlohonolo Seema in what has been described as a never-ending saga of hiring and firing coaches at the Port Elizabeth-based club.
