Cape Town – SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux was ordered to return 37 million rand to Stellenbosch University after a referee found to have been embezzled from the university’s coffers, News24 reported.

Roux, who held a senior position in the university’s finance department between 2002 and 2010, was accused of tampering with accounting systems to illegally funnel millions of rand to the Maties Rugby Club.

According to the News24 report, attorney Alasdair Sholto-Douglas SC issued the ruling finding that Roux had breached the terms of her contract with Stellenbosch University by failing to act in her best interest.

On Thursday, SA Rugby issued a statement saying they were aware of the reports involving its CEO.

“We have referred the matter to our legal advisors for their advice on governance matters, as we have done throughout this process,” the statement read.

“We further note that the process allows the parties to file an appeal and we will not comment further until the outcome of said appeal is known.”
