JOHANNESBURG – The Road Freight Transport Association (RFA) has called for urgent intervention after announcing the deaths of four truckers at the Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths are not yet clear, but are believed to be related to the troubling situation unfolding there.

It’s been an agonizing last couple of days for thousands of people who have been forced to wait in meandering lines in hot conditions.

Many hope to get home in time for Christmas, which is only hours away.

There is concern that the lack of sanitary facilities, as well as food and water, could lead to a humanitarian crisis.

Internal Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, who has cited drivers’ non-compliance as a reason behind the congestion, said he was now in talks with the Health Department to amend the restrictions for truck drivers.

However, the association’s Gavin Kelly has criticized the comments as a mere deviation.

“Why is this happening? The government turns around and says, ‘Well, the trucks are reaching the border, arriving at the border without the necessary documentation.” That is absolute nonsense. Trucks must be pre-authorized by Sars customs before they can even enter a border customs area. “
