JOHANNESBURG – Vice President David Mabuza has used his Christmas message to emphasize that South Africans have a responsibility to each other this holiday season.
Mabuza addressed the nation before Christmas Day, where he asked ordinary citizens to play their part in preventing the spread of infections.
His appeal comes at a time when the country is reporting an alarming rise in coronavirus infections.
More than 14,000 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, the highest infections recorded in the country since the start of the pandemic.
The vice president also pleaded with South Africans to refrain from complacency amid the holiday season, saying they must continue to adhere strictly to COVID-19 health protocols.
“The current resurgence and rise in infections continues to demand our collective commitment and adherence to all COVID-19 protocols and regulations. We as a nation cannot afford to be complacent. As we celebrate Christmas, we must always adhere to COVID-19 regulations to ensure that each of us takes responsibility for preventing further spread. “
Mabuza said that despite the challenges faced in 2020, South Africans must strive to find new possibilities and aspirations in the new year.
