Vice President David Mabuza has told South Africans not to despair despite all the setbacks suffered in the past year. Instead, he urged them to join President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership in the country’s economic recovery and to “fight together to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic.”

In the annual Christmas message from the Presidency, traditionally delivered by the vice president, Mabuza said that “the government will continue to provide targeted support to key economic sectors to foster recovery and stem the wave of job losses,” as the country faces a resurgence in infections that threatens to overcome the first wave.

“As a nation, we must deepen social solidarity, hold hands, and promote love, generosity and compassion during this holiday season,” Mabuza said.

“We must stand up and fight together to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure that we protect and support the poor and vulnerable within our society.”

Mabuza said:

“Christmas inspires a new season of hope, a leap into new prospects for progress and future prospects. We must not despair. This nation will rise up again and set out on the road to recovery. Ours is a resilient nation that Over the years, it withstood all kinds of storms and vicissitudes that came its way. We are a nation that has emerged from a divided and painful past, but emerged stronger, united and triumphant in the face of adversity. “

He also praised frontline workers, whom he said “embody our patriotic spirit of commitment, endurance and personal sacrifice.”

He said: “They have put their lives in danger to save lives and protect us all. Some of them have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation. As we celebrate Christmas, we salute all front-line workers for their courage, compassion and National duty. We salute each and every one of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. As ordinary citizens, we must play our role in preventing the spread of Covid-19 infections. “

Mabuza said that preparing the health system to deal with new infections remains a key priority, adding that the preparations and interventions necessary to contain the spread of infections could put the country on the road to recovery.

He said:

“Now, as a society, it is in our hands to help reverse the spread of the disease and the loss of life.”

He added HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and other communicable diseases, as well as poverty and social ills to the list of challenges that must be addressed with a deeper sense of social solidarity.

After the recording, he urged the staff of the Presidency to help reduce the number of infections and deaths from Covid-19.
