A 33-year-old police officer was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving after being filmed fighting with a minibus taxi driver in Cape Town.

In the video, the uniformed police officer gets out of a marked van, approaches the minibus and punches the driver. A fist fight ensues and the bailiff falls to the ground and immobilizes him. The taxi driver spits in the face of the policeman while giving more blows.
Witnesses can be heard cheering on the driver as he throws punches.
Potelwa said that when police arrived at the scene they found two damaged vehicles and a policeman who appeared unsteady on his feet.
“Lingelethu West police officers took him in for examination. He was later charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as reckless and negligent driving. He is a 33-year-old police officer attached to Khayelitsha Site B Police Station in the Crime Prevention Unit. Since then an internal disciplinary investigation has been launched, ”said Potelwa.
The identity of the taxi driver is known and he will be interviewed as part of the investigation.
“The SAPS leadership condemns the misconduct of the police officer and is committed to ensuring that there will be consequences for their actions. At the same time, the behavior of the taxi driver is the subject of police investigation.
“Police officers are reminded to maintain the SAPS name at all times in the way they conduct themselves,” Potelwa said.
