Tottenham Hotspur had just beaten Stoke City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals when the next draw was completed, and Spurs will host Brentford.
Tottenham Hotspur were just hours away from defeating Stoke City and their next Carabao Cup rival, Brentford Bees, is already known. At first, one might exhale when Spurs avoided any of the remaining Premier League teams – the two Manchester clubs. However, those teams are a well-known entity for Spurs against championship Brentford, who Tottenham have not faced in some time.
Unknown product
Tottenham have played against Brentford twice, in September and October 1992 as part of the League Cup. Tottenham won at home 3-1 and then on the road in October 2-4. Since those two meetings almost 30 years ago, the clubs have not met in any competition. If you’re a casual Spurs fan, you probably think we just got a gift. However, Brentford is not just any championship club.
Last season, Brentford Bees was the talk of the championship. After a slow start to the season, they managed to put things together and together with Leeds were scoring machines. Brentford managed a difference of more than 42 goals on the season. More 42!
Unfortunately for the Bees, they finished third and then fell on a late goal in the playoff final against Fulham. While Brentford got some revenge on Fulham by beating them earlier in the Carabao Cup, that’s not the same as losing the Championship playoff final.
Brentford in a race of form
Currently, Brentford is fourth in the championship, 8 points behind Norwich after a slow start to the season. However, Brentford is undefeated in 13 games in the Championship as of this writing. As for the Carabao Cup, Brentford have beaten four consecutive Premier League teams to reach the semi-final, so a fifth wouldn’t seem like a big deal.
The point is that neither the team nor the fans should take Brentford lightly as they are quite capable and are trying to make a statement as they continue to work their way up in the Championship. While Spurs fans may enjoy the fact, the team avoided Manchester Club in the semi-final, that is by no means child’s play.
While Stoke City was a team trying to prevent Spurs from scoring, Brentford will try to overtake Tottenham, like Leicester and Liverpool. It should be a good match, but don’t overlook the visitors.
