Cape Town – A 57-year-old man was killed when his paraglider crashed into Lion’s Head on Wednesday.
Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) spokesman Johann Marais said that around 12:38 p.m. Wednesday they were informed that a paraglider had landed on Lion’s Head.
The AMS rescue helicopter contracted by the Department of Health was cleared and a ground crew was deployed to create a temporary landing zone near the Kramat.
“At first a technical lifeguard and a paramedic were inserted near where the paraglider was seen. It was learned that a 57-year-old local man was fatally injured when his paraglider crashed into the mountain.
“More technical rescuers were flown to the scene of the accident to recover the body and temporarily secure the paraglider apparatus. From then on, the body was airlifted from the mountain, ”Marais said.
Members of MCSA Cape Town will attend to lower the paragliding apparatus later.
“As this incident constitutes an unnatural death, the matter is now the subject of a formal police investigation. Therefore, we cannot release any more information. We sympathize with family and friends, ”said Marais.
Over the weekend, a Joburg woman died while walking with her family on Table Mountain. Zarina Dealmeida Talia, 43, of Lenasia, was walking with her family when the unfortunate incident occurred on the Skeleton Gorge trail on Saturday at 10.10 a.m.
Talia was on a week-long visit to Cape Town with her husband and two daughters.
They buried her Sunday morning.
