The Gauteng provincial government has raised concerns about reports of people violating Covid-19 health protocols as the country battles a second wave of infections.
In a statement Tuesday, the provincial government said it has taken note of videos circulating on social media platforms that show young people partying in large numbers with little or no adherence to non-pharmaceutical protocols for preventing the spread. of Covid-19.
Gauteng’s Acting Prime Minister Panyaza Lesufi strongly condemned this irresponsible behavior, which undoubtedly increases the risk of the spread of Covid-19.
“Large gatherings and parties are known to spread Covid-19 and should be avoided. Given that the country is now in the second wave, with a sharp increase in new cases, fueled by a recently discovered new variant of Covid-19, it is absolutely necessary that we all do our part to stop the spread of the virus. Lesufi said.
To ensure compliance with the Covid-19 restrictions, the Gauteng province said its law enforcement agencies and other relevant institutions will be in full force to enforce national disaster regulations.
“Tough action will be taken against anyone who breaks the law,” the interim prime minister said.
Joint operations that include roadblocks, inspection of stores, restaurants and bars will continue throughout the province during the holiday season.
With many ready to take a break during the holiday season, Lesufi reminded South Africans that this year’s holiday season is different due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have to adapt to new ways of celebrating and relating to family and friends.
“Adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as maintaining physical detachment, the use of masks and regular hand hygiene, remains the most effective tool to protect ourselves and others against the virus.
“Let’s protect ourselves and others by avoiding the ‘three C’s’ [namely] Enclosed spaces, crowded places and close contact environments, ”said the acting prime minister.
