Barricade on Cape Town’s M5 to verify coronavirus travel permits (Jenni Evans, News24)
A member of the mayor’s committee (MMC) responsible for community safety in a northwestern municipality ended up with eggs in his face this week when he was arrested on pending traffic tickets while on his way to a holiday road safety operation.
Ramotshere Moiloa’s local municipality, MMC Buti Monamodi, was arrested at the N4 Welbedacht junction on Monday.
Northwest Department of Community Safety and Transportation Management spokesman Alpheus Koonyaditse said he was arrested for unpaid tickets that were issued for traffic violations. He promptly paid outstanding fines.

“Monamodi was accompanying Mayor Lerato Selebogo to join the operation, led by MEC Seal Lehari, when he was arrested. Despite the hiccups, Monamodi was able to join Lehari and Selebogo in the successful two-hour roadblock operation.
“Impressively, more than 90% of the stopped taxis were found to be in compliance with their valid licenses and permits. Lehari said the law should apply to everyone and was happy that no exception was made for Monamodi,” Koonyaditse said.
