Pretoria – Young people caught on camera at a party and disregarding the blocking regulations on the Mabopane highway will be tracked and put on the books, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said.
Mbalula said he was shocked by the behavior of the group that blocked the road with vehicles for drinking and partying in defiance of safety protocols.
He said he was disappointed by the trending videos, which showed revelers gathering and partying with little regard for Covid-19 security protocols and lockdown regulations.
In one video, a large number of young people parked on the side of the road and medians, apparently drinking, partying and having a good time. Passing motorists opened their windows to record the action along the stretch of highway.
The other showed the group holding bottles of liquor. They were not wearing masks and were yelling and playing loud music from their cars.
People taking the background videos could be heard saying that President Cyril Ramaphosa would impose a tougher lockdown due to such behavior.

A disappointed Mbalula said on Tuesday: “We are equally dismayed by the video clips of the shameful behavior of young people, in what is known as a ‘dinho convoy’ along the R80 Mabopane motorway towards the Daspoort tunnel, who were partying, drinking and blocking the road in large numbers.
“These cowardly acts invariably end in tragedy … This behavior is unacceptable, and our law enforcement authorities will show no mercy towards people who turn our roads into party places and disregard traffic rules or Covid-19 regulations. “.
People who commented on social media said that their behavior was shameful and an indication of how rude society had become.
Lawrence Letsie posted another video on social media of some of the young men injured after a vehicle in the convoy crashed.
Most of the respondents condemned the large group for their irresponsible behavior.
