The taxi involved in the Wednesday morning accident on the N3 near Ashburton
At least two taxi passengers were killed Wednesday morning on the southbound N3 road near Ashburton on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg.
Sources at the scene said the accident occurred when a container fell from a truck and landed in the taxi.
Twelve people have been injured, some of them in serious condition. The taxi was pushed against the railing and emergency workers were searching the wreckage and the nearby veld for more wounded.
The taxi is believed to be from Gauteng.
The accident occurred on the uneven road before the Ashburton Bridge.
Robert MacKenzie of KZN EMS said paramedics have treated 12 patients, four with serious injuries and eight with minor injuries.
The road is closed as emergency services work to clear the scene.
