CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (D) lost its judicial offer to reopen the beaches along the Garden Route.

The Western Cape Superior Court issued the ruling on Tuesday.

The prosecutor took the matter to court on Monday, arguing that the government’s decision to close the beaches during the holiday season would have devastating consequences for the tourism sector.

Party Leader John Steenhuisen: “The Democratic Alliance takes note of the ex tempore ruling handed down by the Western Cape Superior Court in relation to our case to overturn the closure of the Gardden Route beaches and question the irrationality of the time restrictions on the beaches. While we are disappointed by the ruling in favor of beach closures, we welcome the modified hours of operation of the beach that we have managed to change from 6 am to 6 pm. “

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that beaches along the Garden Route and in the Eastern Cape would be closed until January 3 in an attempt to try to slow the rapid spread of COVID-19.
