CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Department of Health said that COVID-19 cases were now much higher than the first wave, with more than 34,000 active infections reported.

The provincial department said it was seeing an increase well above the levels seen in June.

The department’s Dr. Keith Cloete said there had been a 17% increase in deaths in the last week.

“Hospitalizations have exceeded the peak of the first wave and deaths are increasing rapidly. We have seen sharp increases in all areas of the metro and literally all areas of the metro except Khayelitsha have passed their first peak.”

However, Cloete said that Garden Route was seeing the first signs of stabilization.

“It is mainly due to the decline in the three great sub-districts of Garden Route, the three largest municipalities: Bitou, George and Knysna. There is evidence that cases are going down.”
