Durban – The quick thinking of a Durban store manager during a robbery led to the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect and the recovery of 80 cell phones and jewelry.

Police said the teen entered a business on Umgeni Road, Durban, shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, and threatened employees with a knife and a pneumatic drill. He loaded 80 cell phones and jewelry in two bags.

Police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala said the store manager managed to close the roll-up door while the suspect was still inside and immediately contacted police.

“Durban Central Police Officers, along with Metro Police, responded quickly and the suspect was caught inside the commercial premises.

“The stolen property was found in the suspect’s possession, as well as the weapons used. Charges of theft, possession of stolen property and possession of a dangerous weapon were opened at Durban Central SAPS for further investigation.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Khombinkosi Jula saluted the police officers for the quick response that led to the arrest of the culprit.
