Durban – A senior police officer attached to the Anti-Corruption Unit in KwaZulu-Natal spent the night behind bars and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday for allegedly receiving 5,000 rand from a whistleblower in a robbery case.

According to the police, the complainant approached the superior officer, a 56-year-old colonel from the Anti-Corruption Unit in a robbery case that was investigated by his section.

Hawks spokesman Capt.Simphiwe Mhlongo said the whistleblower allegedly requested a progress report on the case and was allegedly informed that something was wrong in one case.

“The suspect allegedly promised to help the whistleblower on the condition that he pay a bonus of R5,000 for Christmas,” Mhlongo said.

“The matter was then reported to members of the Hawks and a sting operation was carried out. The members swooped into his office where they caught him red-handed after accepting cash from the plaintiff. He was subsequently arrested and charged accordingly, ”he said.

The colonel was detained in Durban Central Police holding cells overnight.

He is due to appear before the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.
