Gary Neville praises Liverpool’s “outstanding” star who is “best by a mile”

Gary Neville says Liverpool “were never going to win the league” until the signing of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The Brazilian came to the Reds from Roma in the summer of 2018, and has won the Champions League and the Premier League in his two seasons with the Reds.

Neville is a huge fan and believes that the stopper is the best in the English top flight.

“Better by a mile,” he told Sky Sports.

“When you have an outstanding goalkeeper, the difference he makes is off the scale.

“From a good goalkeeper to a great goalkeeper, the points you are going to win are not quantifiable. Alisson does it week after week.

“Even at Crystal Palace on Saturday, Liverpool were by far the best team, but there was a 20 minute period at the start of the game when there were a couple of moments where Alisson makes a save, where if that comes in, the things could change.

“He makes save after save, good call after good call, has made the fewest mistakes and gives total security and authority to everyone else on that team.”

“It is the most difficult decision on the pitch, but for a first-rate team that is going to win the League or the Champions League, I don’t know how you are going to win without having an incredible goalkeeper, and he is an incredible goalkeeper.”

Neville added that Alisson’s influence in Liverpool has been transformative.

“They went from number two in the Champions League, from number two and three in the League, without him, to number one,” he said.

“They were never going to win the League with the previous goalkeepers. In a million years, it will never, not happen.

“That’s eight, 10, 15 points. It can’t be quantified.”
