DYLAN JACK identifies outstanding South African players based on performances in the fourth round of the Currie Cup.

In the fourth round of the Currie Cup, the Cheetahs bounced back from two consecutive losses with a 35-31 victory over the Pumas in Nelspruit.

Meanwhile, the Lions rose above the Sharks to second place in the table with a dominant performance from their forwards that earned them a 27-12 victory against the Durban team in Johannesburg.

The Vodacom Bulls had to settle for two points as their match against Griquas in Kimberley was canceled due to Covid-19 protocols after positive tests at the Pretoria camp.

The nature of the Lions’ victory sees 12 of their starting lineup against the Sharks earn a spot on this week’s team. This includes a tight five from Lions that dominated the Sharks’ scrum and lineout. There were particularly outstanding performances in this regard by prop Dylan Smith and the blocking partner of Willem Alberts and Marvin Orie, while hooker Jaco Visagie was tireless on defense and breaking through.

There are two Cheetahs representatives in forwards Jeandre Rudolph and Andisa Ntsila, who both scored two tries in a man of the game performance against the Pumas.

The Lions have six other reps on the baseline, including midfielder pair Andre Warner and Elton Jantjies and central combination Dan Kriel and Wandisile Simelane. Wing Courtnall Skosan scored two tries against the Sharks, while fullback Tiaan Swanepoel handled the Sharks’ kicking game very well and scored a long-range penalty and conversion.

Sbu Nkosi is the only representative for the Sharks as, despite finishing on the losing end, he worked incredibly hard on the ball and made a total of nine tackles.
