Airlines ‘concerned’ by ban on arrivals to South Africa after COVID-19 variant discovery

CAPE TOWN – Some South African airlines weighed in on Monday about the potential disruption to international flights as many countries report a more communicable variant of COVID-19.

The airline’s flights only resumed earlier this month after eight months of no operation due to the severe impact of the blockade.

Comair spokesman Brian Kitchin said a comprehensive ban would have a knock-on effect on operations.

“It will also affect hotels, rental companies and travel agents in this market … it is a very worrying development and I imagine that governments may also consider implementing more restrictions in our market in South Africa and obviously other markets,” he said Kitchin.
