JOHANNESBURG – Despite a new variant of the coronavirus being identified in South Africa, the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday went ahead with its judicial challenge against the government’s decision to close the beaches in the Garden Route district.
The matter must be heard in the Western Cape Superior Court.
The district attorney wants the court to declare the regulation illegal and invalid, saying coastal municipalities fought hard against beach closures.
The party believes that the regulation is not supported by medical or scientific evidence.
“The Office of the Prosecutor and our governments in the coastal municipalities of the Western Cape have fought vehemently against any beach closures during the festive season, as such a regulation is not in line with the scientific advice available from medical experts and is impossible to do comply, “DA leader John Steenhuisen said in a statement.
“This regulation is also proving to be the final nail in the coffin of the Garden Route coastal economies, which are approaching total collapse,” he added.
