LONDON – Liverpool ended a three-month wait for a Premier League away win in record fashion with a 7-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday to move six points clear at the top of the table.
The English champions’ first away win in the top flight by seven goals set a scoreboard for rivals hoping to dethrone Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Liverpool took advantage of the momentum of a last-minute winner who beat Tottenham in second place midweek when Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored twice at Selhurst Park, while Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson also scored.
The victory ensured that Liverpool will lead the league on Christmas for the third season in a row and, based on this evidence, will take some catch in the new year.
“We will have a good Christmas,” Klopp said. “The season is not over, unfortunately, there are a few more games left.”
Due to the late start to the campaign, there are still almost two-thirds of the season left, but Liverpool have so far survived an injury crisis and should only get stronger with more returning players and a chance to fill Virgil Van Dijk’s length. -Temporary absenteeism buying a central in January.
Klopp has repeatedly lamented having to play Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff games after Wednesday night’s games, but his team didn’t suffer a hangover from its efforts against the Spurs.
“Guys are capable of that. It won’t happen every week, but it can happen,” Klopp added. “It just clicked today. After a really intense period for the guys, they should be really proud of how they got those results.”
Salah had even had a rare break early on, but it took his Japanese replacement Minamino just three minutes to open the scoring when Mane scored for his first Premier League goal.
Palace had a chance to get back into the game when Jordan Ayew blew a glorious opportunity by pouncing on an unusual error by Fabinho, but tried to hit Wilfried Zaha instead of going for the goal and played the ball behind the Ivorian.
At the other extreme, the visitors were ruthless as Mane ended his longest goal drought as a Liverpool player in nine games with an excellent spin and a low shot from Firmino’s pass.
A clinical counterattack made the three before the break, as this time Firmino grabbed a cross from Andy Robertson before calmly throwing the ball past Vicente Guaita.
“I thought we were ruthless today and I took our chances,” said Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who snuggled home the fourth from the edge of the area.
Klopp then took the opportunity to give Mane a break, but the Senegalese expressed frustration at being removed to be replaced by Salah.
The Egyptian played his role in the fifth with the pass to Firmino, who has now scored as many goals in his last two games than in his previous 27 Premier League appearances.
Salah then moved to the top of the Premier League scoring chart with 13 goals in the same number of games this season with a late double as he headed home from a corner before turning an incredible effort into the top corner.
