JOHANNESBURG – Four more people have been arrested in connection with the dubious Limpopo housing project, bringing the total number of suspects to six.
They were arrested in different parts of Johannesburg on Sunday morning.
The suspects allegedly endorsed a company known as Grupo Aventino to build Talana’s temporary housing units without thoroughly verifying the validity of the documents presented.
The structures were to help vulnerable people who were exposed to the threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic due to poor living conditions.
It emerged that poor quality tin houses cost R64,000 per unit, which is much higher than the competitive market rate.
The temporary housing units, which cost the government a total of R2.4 million, also did not meet design specifications.
Matimba Maluleka of the Hawks said: “Members of the serious corruption investigation fell on four members of the bid evaluation committee of a housing development agency in Johannesburg. The suspects will appear in Tzaneen Magistrates Court on Monday to face multiple charges of fraud. “
