Police are pursuing a suspect in the Eastern Cape.

Police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly shot a police officer in an apparent robbery at a post office in Gonubie, Eastern Cape.

In a statement, police said they had responded to an alarm call at the post office in the early hours of Saturday.

“While patrolling around the area, an unknown man was found hiding on the premises. The man claimed to be a security guard when questioned by the police. However, it was suspected that the guard was not dressed in a uniform and alleged working for a bogus company, “said police spokesman Colonel Sibongile Soci.

When the police officer tried to search the man, he allegedly pulled out a firearm, shot the officer and fled the scene on foot.

The injured policeman was rushed to hospital.

“At the crime scene screening, it was discovered that the post office was broken into. However, it is unclear if money was taken and that will be part of the investigation,” Soci said.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga said police were hot on the suspect’s heels.
