In a statement Friday, Khensani Maluleke, the acting chairman of the museum’s council, said investigators had provided them with a preliminary report accusing certain officials of wrongdoing. Maluleke said the investigation will be completed in February.
“In November 2018, the Ex-Political Prisoners Association (EPPA) made certain allegations of mismanagement against the Robben Island Museum,” Maluleke said.
“The RIM board ruled that its fiduciary and other legal responsibilities required it to investigate and assess the veracity of these allegations.
“The RIM board took notice of the fact that the minister of the department of sports, arts and culture (Nathi Mthethwa) had carried out an investigation of the EPPA complaints.
“The RIM board’s review and investigation of the EPPA allegations was intended to ensure that the RIM board was complying with its own statutory obligations.
Accordingly, the RIM board requested the assistance of the (department of sports, arts and culture) in appointing independent investigators and legal advisers to carry out the investigation of these allegations, which were duly produced in accordance with their management processes of the supply chain and procurement “.
