Manchester United manager Mike Phelan joked that he can’t handle another Rooney after Wayne’s son Kai joined the club.

The 11-year-old boy signed a deal that puts him on the path to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Wayne is United’s all-time leading scorer having spent 13 years at Old Trafford, several of them with Phelan as coach.

But current United No. 2 couldn’t resist having a bit of fun on social media.

“I’m not sure I can handle another. Keep grafting youngsters and listen to your dad,” he said.

Both Wayne and his wife Coleen also took to social media to express their joy at their son’s achievement.

The current Derby boss said: “Proud day. Kai signs for Manchester United. Keep up the hard work, son.”

While Kai’s mother said on Instagram: “Special night … congratulations Kai. I love you and I am very proud of you.

“Keep doing your best.”

Kai was photographed holding a United jersey with the number 10 on the back, the same number his father wore.

In total, Wayne scored 253 goals in 559 appearances for the Red Devils after moving from Everton as a teenager in 2004.

He won 12 major trophies at United, including five Premier League and Champions League titles.

Since then, Wayne has returned to Everton, moved to MLS, and has since returned to Derby.

Philip Cocu’s firing at Pride Park has seen the 35-year-old take on the role on an interim basis.

Kai is the oldest of Rooney’s children, and the couple have three more children: Klay, 7, Kit, 4, and Cass, 2.
