JOHANNESBURG – With local government elections only a few months away, the African National Congress (ANC) will move forward with its January 8 declaration and anniversary celebrations.

But it will be a different event in keeping with the fierce second wave of COVID-19 infections that is hitting the nation.

The January 8 statement is a platform for the party to assess its earnings and set new goals for the year.

The ruling party, which has been suffering heavy losses at the polls, said on Friday that it will reach out to traditional leaders in Limpopo province, where major events are expected to take place, and reconnect with citizens.

The January 8 celebrations, which are planned for January 5, 2021, will see members of the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) tour the country to address the events that will take place in each province.

Although physical assistance would be limited to 100 people, many more will follow the procedures that weekend virtually.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the mitigation of otherwise significant events, the liquidity-strapped ANC will also save funds, with Assistant Secretary-General Jessie Duarte said they would also test whether the model could be used in the future.

“It is a huge task and it will be the first time that we will try to do something like this. Hopefully we get it right, ”Duarte said.

However, the events have already drawn criticism from the ANC, with many wondering if the party could practically limit the number of attendees, as the second wave of the pandemic continued to wreak havoc.
