- Two members of the Proteas test team tested positive for the coronavirus ahead of the two-match test series against Sri Lanka.
- CSA also confirmed that no other players on the team were considered close contacts.
- The first test against Sri Lanka is scheduled for 10:00 on Boxing Day at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that two members of the Proteas The team has returned with a positive result for coronavirus.
These tests, which are part of the CSA Covid-19 protocol for the tour, were conducted on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the team’s entry into the biosecure environment for the two-match test series against Sri Lanka.
CSA stated that the two anonymous players will not enter the biosecurity bubble and will not compete in the test series.
“Players will no longer be part of the testing team and will observe Covid-19 protocols, including isolation with immediate effect. The CSA medical team will monitor them to ensure their health and well-being.”
CSA also confirmed that no other currently named team players were deemed close contacts after contact tracing procedures were carried out.
This comes after the postponement of the sixth round of the Franchise Series for 4 days after an increase in Covid-19 cases across the country.
Earlier in the week, the four-day Titans and Dolphins game was canceled on the second day after a player tested positive for the coronavirus.
Five members of the Proteas Test squad were competing in the Titans and Dolphins match at Centurion.
Five other members of the test squad played at Bloemfontein when the Knights defeated the Lions. The game also saw a Lions player testing positive on the third day of the game.
There were concerns about the status of Sri Lanka’s test series given that the ODI series of Proteas against England was canceled earlier this month after a series of coronavirus threats emerged within the Cape Town bio-bubble.
The team will meet in Pretoria to begin preparations for the tour on Saturday, December 19.
