JOHANNESBURG – Police Minister Bheki Cele has asked law enforcement officers at various ports of entry in South Africa to step up border control.

The minister on Thursday monitored compliance with COVID-19 regulations at the Beitbridge border post at Musina in Limpopo.
In recent weeks, the police have intercepted illegal goods, including vehicles being transported across the border, while the port of entry was hit by long delays and allegations of bribery and corruption.
Cele made a direct appeal to officials to uphold South African law and borders during the holiday season.
“When you move around and find an illegal shebeen, close it up. Once you are clear that it is illegal, close it, ”said Cele.

Beitbridge is one of the busiest border posts on the continent, with hundreds of large trucks and passengers crossing every day.
When launching the security campaign at the border post, Cele said that thousands of people are expected to move between the border during the December period, it is important that officials respect the law and COVID-19 regulations.
“Their job is to protect and prevent, but South Africans must learn to behave. But special care is expected of you, but citizens must not break the law, “he said.
Cele said there would be more law enforcement officials at the border, which has been a site of widespread criticism due to its fences.
