The Western Cape government has welcomed the decision to allow Sunday trading of wine at registered wineries and wine farms under the country’s new closure rules.

In a bulletin published on Thursday (December 18) by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the national government said that registered wineries and wine estates can continue to operate during the weekends.

This includes tastings and sale of wine to the public for external consumption, subject to strict compliance with the curfew and compliance with social distancing measures and health protocols.

Wine tastings and the sale of wine for external consumption had previously been limited to Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 according to the country’s updated closing rules.

“This new amendment removes this limitation that would have been detrimental to the wine tourism and agricultural processing economy, which employs thousands of people in the Western Cape,” said Western Cape MEC Ivan Meyer.

“The decision of the National Government now allows the Wine Industry to focus on what matters now: the reconstruction of the wine tourism economy.”

While the Western Cape government is concerned about the resurgence of Covid-19 cases in the country, Meyer said it is critical that we strike the right balance between saving lives and livelihoods.

“Visiting a wine estate that follows strict health and safety protocols is an example of safe tourist behavior during this difficult time. This is because it is primarily an outdoor activity with good ventilation, where social distancing is possible.

“We encourage visitors to the Western Cape to visit our registered wineries and wineries. By doing so, you will be contributing to the economic recovery of the wine industry ”.

On Monday, the government announced that the sale of liquor in establishments authorized for off-site consumption is only allowed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, except Friday, weekends and holidays.

Alcoholic beverages can be sold in authorized establishments for consumption on the spot, subject to strict compliance with the curfew. The consumption of liquor is not allowed in public places, except in authorized premises for consumption on the spot.
