Mamelodi Sundowns’ irresistible star Themba Zwane has been challenged to shift to a higher gear and unleash the soccer monster in him.
Sundowns coach Steve Komphela launched the challenge to current Player of the Season, Footballer of the Season and Midfielder of the Season as he continues to light the stage with some impressive performances this season.
“The guy is immensely talented and I think he still operates within his comfort zone.
“He needs to go to a higher level of discomfort so he can stretch his potential, he will be a monster,” said Komphela, who sat on the bench with goalkeeping coach Wendell Robinson in the absence of suspended Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena. it didn’t feel right.
Zwane has started the campaign phenomenally, scoring seven goals in as many games and providing an assist in the league.
In a 2-0 league win over TS Galaxy on Tuesday night, he put on a man of the match performance by providing the assist for Peter Shalulile’s opener and securing three points with a goal in the second half.
“Zwane is a player who plays effortlessly and is able to do whatever he wants with the ball,” Komphela continued.
“When he meets people who trust him and who trust him, this will only get better.
“Look at the goal he scored (Tuesday) against TS Galaxy, the way he took a spot, lifted the ball and hit the back of the net, it tells you this guy is playing stress-free.
“He’s calm, he’s comfortable and he’s happy.
“We just hope and wish that he stays that way and improves even more, but if you asked me, I still see room for improvement in Mshishi in terms of what he can do.
“It all comes from the training, but most of all it helped us that as soon as we sent through Kermit Erasmus, Shalulile and Zwane immediately clicked and the back of that click builds confidence.
Zwane has formed a devastating attack partnership with Shalulile and Erasmus reminiscent of Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat, and Keagan Dolly’s “CBD” combination.
So far Zwane, Shalulile and Erasmus have scored a total of 13 goals.
Komphela said it was not easy to play the game without defender Motjeka Madisha, who was reportedly killed in a terrible car accident at Kempton Park earlier this week.
“I have been reviewing the reports, I have been listening to what is said and I have observed the players.
“We have been through this moment that we are going through and it has not been easy.
“When you see the players at the end of the game show themselves with that degree of pride, it is a sign that they understood the purpose of the 90 minutes and I think they did extremely well.”
