Traffic law enforcement officials are stepping up the campaign to remove unsafe vehicles from the road ahead of the holiday season’s peak trips, says the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
Vehicle fitness has been identified as a key focus area in this year’s holiday season road safety campaign, the RTMC said. Last year, vehicle fitness was a factor in 7% of the fatal accidents that occurred during the holiday season.
“More than 1,800 vehicles have been discontinued after it was discovered that they were being operated on public roads while having major defects that put the lives of other road users at risk,” the agency said Thursday.
“1,465 additional public transport vehicles have been seized for operating against their permits and overloading passengers.”
Some of the main defects identified in vehicles include faulty brakes, dysfunctional steering racks, slick tires, and badly cracked windshields.
Vehicle owners must repair defects and submit them to roadworthiness tests before being used again on public roads.
“Motorists are cautioned that they run the risk of discontinuing their vehicles if they have modified vehicles against manufacturers’ specifications,” the RTMC said.
The corporation has purchased 19 mobile vehicle test stations that have been distributed in different provinces to help identify vehicles that are not suitable for operating on public roads.
The RTMC asked motorists to repair their vehicles before setting off on their trips and avoid overloading to reduce the number of people dying in traffic accidents.
