Manuel wins defamation appeal against EFF, but still won’t receive damages for R500k

JOHANNESBURG – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFFs) failed in their efforts to appeal a court ruling that his leadership defamed former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel when he made false claims that he was biased in naming Edward Kieswetter as South Commissioner. African Revenue Services (Sars).

However, on Thursday, the Supreme Court of Appeals annulled the award of R500,000 in damages to Manuel and referred the cost determination to the higher court for reconsideration.

Manuel sued the EFF, leader Julius Malema and MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi after they issued a statement last year calling him a “dubious character” and accusing him of nepotism and corruption.

The party made the comments after the panel Manuel was on recommended the appointment of Kieswetter, a quote that the EFF says was based on nepotism.

In the 2019 ruling, the Red Berets were ordered to remove statements from all their media platforms and to apologize within 24 hours.
