Mkhwebane’s office shifts focus of its perjury charges

JOHANNESBURG – While Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s office boasts of having achieved a clean audit for the first time in 25 years, nothing has yet been said about the criminal case against it.

Mkhwebane faces three counts of perjury; she is charged with lying under oath about meetings with former President Jacob Zuma in connection with the report on the Reserve Bank of South Africa and Bankorp, now known as Absa.

The complaint was filed by Accountability Now in 2017 and the National Tax Authority has now confirmed that Mkhwebane received a subpoena.

You are due to appear in Pretoria Magistrates Court on January 21, 2020.

On Thursday morning, Mkhwebane and his office are turning their attention to his financial achievements.

Its spokesperson, Oupa Segalwe, said: “Of the 15,245 issues that the public entrusted to this office during the year under review, the institution was able to finalize around 11,643. We continue to see that municipalities and departments of home affairs, labor and justice and the South African Police Service account for the bulk of all these complaints. “
