José Mourinho makes a great claim of Manchester United

José Mourinho has made a claim about his time as Manchester United manager and a complaint about his departure.

When José Mourinho was appointed Manchester United’s manager, he was expected to turn the club back into Premier League contenders. After all, he had been one of the best coaches in world football for more than a decade at the time and he was someone even the great Sir Alex Ferguson had failed to improve upon.

And to be very honest, for a while, it seemed like I was on the right track. Under him, the club won the League Cup and the Europa League in 2016-17, then finished second in the Premier League and runner-up in the FA Cup in 2017-18.

However, it was the following season that things went south. The Red Devils had a disastrous start to the season, so bad that the club decided to fire him in mid-December. However, Mourinho believes he should have given him more time.

As reported by Goal, the current Tottenham Hotspur manager said:

“At a certain period in my career, with a club profile that I was taking in hand, we didn’t need that long to be successful.

“We did it in Porto, Inter, Real [Madrid]Chelsea, both times we did it without that need for that longevity and also my desire to try different things and my crazy desire to go to many countries, and try to win it, and try to get different experiences in many different countries. It was perfect because it was about winning, and goodbye, and let’s try something else.

“The first club in which I felt that I needed time and they did not give me time was at Manchester United, because I felt that I left in the middle of the process, but I learn very early to respect decisions, which I did at United.”

Knowing what we do know, Mourinho probably should have been given more time to turn the boat around. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been with the club for two years and the Red Devils are nowhere near title contenders at the moment, unless something extraordinary happens this season.

On the other hand, Mourinho took over Tottenham Hotspur in the middle of last season and they are already fighting for the title despite not having an incredible transfer budget from the club. If he manages to lead them to the Premier League title, it will be his third league win and his first since 1960-61.

And it’s hard to argue that he couldn’t have done the same at Old Trafford, considering the club’s budget and its ability to attract the best players. But there is no point in contemplating it now. Solskjaer is the man in charge and the club has made some progress in the league over the last month. Hopefully that continues and if the results go well they could end up challenging this season.
