DURBAN – Supporters of former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said they felt vindicated following her reinstatement as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
His return was recommended by the provincial integrity commission of the African National Congress after his appearance before him.
Gumede had received an extended leave in August, less than a week in his new position.
This followed a decision by the ANC NEC that all members facing criminal charges should deviate from their positions and appear before the party’s integrity commission.
Gumede supporters’ spokesman Mzomuhle Dube said the decision to ask the ANC heavyweight to step aside made no sense.
“When the people who are supposed to preside over the ANC’s policies can’t get to the bottom of whatever problem comes their way, it saddens them. This was totally unnecessary, but it happened. “
Dube said they would now intensify their campaign for her re-election as ANC’s eThekwini regional chair before the party’s conference next year.
“We have always placed our trust in his name and character; We will continue to support her because she has given a lot to the ANC ”.
Meanwhile, ANC KZN spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela told Eyewitness News that Gumede could be removed from her charges if a court of law finds her guilty.
She and 17 others are expected to return to court in March on charges of fraud, corruption and extortion related to bid fraud worth R430 million.
