Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs during the Nedbank Cup, final match 16 between Highlands Park and Kaizer Chiefs at Makhulong Stadium on February 22, 2020 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
A dejected Itumeleng Khune admitted after the match that his recent mistakes had resulted in back-to-back negative results for Kaizer bosses after suffering a 2-1 defeat SuperSport United in a league match at the Lucas Moripe stadium on Tuesday night.
The 33-year-old made nearly identical mistakes in consecutive weeks that have now led the Chiefs to drop points in a 2-2 draw to Black Leopards before Tuesday night’s loss.
International Bafana Bafana said that perhaps he needed to reduce his tendencies to act as an additional ballplayer and refocus on the basics of goalkeeping.
“I don’t know, I think I’m trying to do too much,” Khune told SuperSport TV. “I’m trying to be a player, I’m trying to be a goalkeeper at the same time.
“I think I should go back to being a goalkeeper because I want the team to play more. I mean, I don’t want us to keep playing the ball in the air.
“I want us to play more from behind and I want to search those pockets [of space] unfortunately tonight the boys read the ball he wanted to play in Mshini’s pocket [Nkosingiphile Ngcobo].
“They converted the opportunity and it is sad that he has given away two goals in two weeks, it is very bad and we have to work on it again.”
“Because I have played for many seasons and I never made such mistakes,” Khune said.
The Chiefs will look to get back on the winning track the next time they face Bloemfontein Celtic in a league game at FNB Stadium.
The start is at 18:00.
