As SA prepares for future Covid-19 infections during the holiday season, the Unemployment Insurance Fund is working to ensure that it clears pending claims related to the Covid-19 Temporary Employer / Employee Assistance Plan as quickly as possible. .
The Department of Employment and Labor issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon in which it assured those who had not received their Covid-19 TERS that it would make refunds for pending claims that would apply to the period between April and September 15, 2020.
The fund will also process and pay claims to foreign nationals verified by the South African Department of the Interior and the Revenue Service, and other verification processes, the statement said.
The benefit, which was extended in March when the lockdown was implemented, has been battling claims delays. President Cyril Ramaphosa previously said that the benefit, along with other Covid-19 relief measures, will eventually have to come to an end as the government has limited resources, Fin24 previously reported. In particular, the TERS benefit was extended until October 15.
“The Fund has been repeating claims sporadically over the past months, but this time we have decided to recycle all claims to ensure that those with up-to-date disclosures and discrepancies are paid when we re-execute payments.
“We have spent the entire week re-executing payments for a period from April to September 2020, and will repeat for everyone [the] closing period on Saturday, December 19 to try to clear the backlog as much as possible so that beneficiaries do not suffer during this holiday season, “said Acting Commissioner Marsha Bronkhorst.
The FIU has paid R55.6 billion to millions of workers through the scheme. Of this amount, more than R2 billion was paid to less than half a million foreign nationals.
Payments are being processed for the period from September 16 to October 15; so far 1 billion rand has been distributed. Applications for this particular period close on December 31, the statement said.
Certain FIU staff members, Operations, ICT and Finance, will delay their leave to expedite the processing of payments and claims, as well as claims for normal FIU benefits.
“Senior management officials and those who process and pay claims will not go on vacation, except during the mandatory shutdown period from December 24, 2020 to January 1, 2021, which is used for maintenance of the systems.
