The comments came after the Homeland Security Minister’s decision to sign extradition documents for self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary.

Leaders of the Enlightenment Christian Encounter Church fled South Africa in November while on bail.

They face charges of fraud and money laundering worth R100 million.

The Malawi government said that the decision to extradite the Bushiris back to South Africa is in accordance with its law and not just because South Africa has said so.

Government spokesman Gospel Kazako said South Africa must take Malawi’s legal system seriously.

“Our country may be a country with a low GDP in terms of economic ties, but I can assure you, our legal issues are very, very high. We have a very independent judiciary and very well trained, experienced and reputable judges in our courts. “

The Malawian government has submitted documents to the courts to issue an arrest warrant for the Bushiris.

That should see the couple return to South Africa to stand trial.
