The body of an Eastern Cape police officer was found in a river.

The search for an Eastern Cape police officer ended in tragedy when his body was found in the Mzimvubu River around 3pm on Saturday, near a shelter in Port St Johns.

Petty Officer Nosipho Mpakati was last seen by her 16-year-old son leaving her home in the Port St Johns town of Tyibane on Tuesday at 11pm.

According to police spokesman Colonel Sibongile Soci, the Mthatha K9 search and rescue team, with the help of a helicopter from the emergency services and the community, had been searching for her.

His body was seen floating in the river by the owner of the shelter, who raised the alarm to the police. It was recovered from the river on Saturday.

An autopsy will be performed to establish the cause of death, Soci said.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga sent her condolences to Mpakati’s family, friends and colleagues.
