Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa led a government tribute to Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns utility player Motjeka Madisha following his death on Sunday morning.
The 25-year-old from the village of Ga-Madisha in Zebediela in Limpopo was killed when a vehicle he was traveling in crashed into a steel pole in damp conditions and burst into flames near Kempton Park.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight and Madisha’s sports car caught fire on the Zuurfontein road near the Sundowns training base in Chloorkop.
It is not clear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Madisha’s passing comes as Sundowns still mourned the death of another former Bafana advocate, Anele Ngcongca, who also died in a horrific car accident.
Ngcongca crashed his car onto the N2 outside Mtunzini on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal last month and was buried in his hometown in Cape Town last week.
Mthethwa said her department has been deeply affected by Madisha’s tragic death.
“Our prayers go out to Madisha’s family, friends and teammates during this very difficult time,” Mthethwa said.
“He was a model professional and one of the most promising footballers in the country.
“Another family has lost a child and a breadwinner. We express our deepest condolences to Madisha’s family ‚Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and the nation in general.
Madisha’s Sundowns club has yet to release an official statement a day after the catastrophic news story broke.
Former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, who is now in charge of Egyptian giant Al Ahly, was Madisha’s mentor during the player’s formative years at the club.
