The ambitious AmaZulu from Durban appointed Benni McCarthy as his new coach on Monday.

The capture of the former Cape Town coach is a coup for the money-spending AmaZulu as they continue their tireless quest to challenge the status quo in South African soccer.

Club owner Sandile Zungu spoke with several new players at the start of the season and made it clear that he aims to finish in the top four for the team.

But McCarthy, who replaces Ayanda Dlamini, said she has set her sights higher.

“Director [Zungu] he wants the top four, but my ambitions are higher than the top four, ”McCarthy said.

The former Bafana star Bafana said he is happy with the players he is about to inherit and firmly believes they are talented enough to compete with the best in the league.

“Now I am ready to compete with Usian Bolt,” said the coach.

“With the players that AmaZulu has, I don’t see why I can’t aim for first place.”

The length of the contract was not disclosed, but Zungu said he hopes McCarthy will emulate Pitso Mosimane, who stayed at Mamelodi Sundowns for eight years during a very successful career before his departure to Egyptian powerhouses Al Ahly in September.

“The contract is long enough for Benni to fulfill the ambitions of this team. If he still enjoys his time at AmaZulu, we will extend it.”

McCarthy said he was still wet behind his ears when he took over at City and is no longer the rookie coach he was after gaining crucial experience in Cape Town.

“I’m much calmer than before, and I have a little more experience.”

McCarthy will have a lot of work for him as AmaZulu is 11th in the rankings and hasn’t exactly lit the playing field after winning just one game in six matches, three draws and two losses.
