Cape Town – Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde has asked residents to keep gatherings small and take them outside this holiday season after videos of people not adhering to Covid-19 protocols were went viral.
Winde explained that the province was currently in the midst of a serious Covid-19 resurgence, explaining that the provincial government has repeatedly asked companies and individuals to change their behavior to flatten the curve.
“For several months, we have maintained commitments with religious leaders and with the business, tourism and hotel sectors. We have also made information and materials available for your use.
“We have worked hard to provide residents with the information they need to make better decisions and protect themselves and their families.
“Any event where people are not socially estranged, are in close contact with other people, and do not wear masks has the potential to quickly become a super-spreading event, which could have deadly consequences for staff, customers and clients. vulnerable, ”Winde said.
“Super spread events can also put additional pressure on our healthcare system – as we have seen before, a large number of infections can occur as a result of a single event.”
His reiterated call for obedience to Covid-19 protocols comes after videos were shared on social media showing residents without masks or social distancing.
“A video was circulated on social media of an event organized in a Cape Town establishment on Sunday in which few Covid-19 protocols appear to be observed. The video clip shows a large number of people very close, and almost none of the customers wears a mask. “
“A second video, apparently from a recent local religious gathering, has also been circulating on social media showing a similar lack of social distancing and wearing of masks in a crowded room indoors,” Winde said.
“Our Joint Operations Center (JOC) has alerted SAPS and the City of Cape Town enforcement team for further investigation.”
The prime minister acknowledged that it was the end of a long and difficult year and many wanted to relax and let their hair down, but stressed that people cannot let their guard down.
“We must all take responsibility for ensuring that we can protect ourselves and our loved ones. This is how we will save lives and livelihoods.
“This holiday season, keep gatherings small and take them outside to reduce the risk of infection. Follow the golden rules that include wearing masks, hand washing and social distancing and avoid the 3 C’s: close contact, confined spaces and crowded places. “
